1) Calvary
dir. John Michael McDonagh

I cannot quite understand why I love this film so much. I am afraid I will hype it to infinite levels that will make others too weary of it. A few of the thing I like about it are the religious themes, Gleeson’s performance and character, the altruistic story, the screenplay in general, the cinematography, the tragic music, and everything in between.

(Note: I have not seen Selma, Inherent Vice, A Most Violent Year, Unbroken, Cake, Mommy, or American Sniper so that is why you have not seen them on here.)

2) Birdman
dir. Alejandro González Iñárritu

The state of art, cinema, theatre, Hollywood, and criticism is the story of Birdman. It isn’t about an actor making a comeback like the pitiful people who only watch movies for surface level depth if they watch them at all. It is a satire on the way the world works and a more idealistic way it should be. Michael Keaton can continue to do whatever he wants to do, I won’ beg for him to do more work after this project because this is his magnum opus, his and Alejandro’s too.

3) The Grand Budapest Hotel
dir. Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson has bested his work in The Royal Tenenbaums. I never thought it would happen. That and Fantastic Mr. Fox have been my favorite of his work for a long time. Like most of these moviesm I am ashamed that it cannot be higher, but some films must be put down lower on the list, which is exactly why I hate making them. At the same time, Anderson made his darkest and lightest film but the truest thing that makes this film as remarkable as it is is Ralph Fiennes.

4) Boyhood
dir. Richard Linklater

This was my childhood. This was every boy’s childhood. The details are rough and change from time to time, but Linklater and Coltrane together make a film about life by showing life. They take their time by showing you time. They show you a mother by showing you a mother. A father. A sister. I only see life when I see this picture and that’s all I really need.

5) Gone Girl
dir. David Fincher

And the Oscar should go to: Rosamund Pike. All the love is going to Julianne Moore for Still Alice, a decent movie that does a lot of things the same way a lot of other films have done. If Julianne Moore gets the Oscar, it is more because the forgot to give her one for her other work. Hell, even her role in Maps to the Stars is more deserving than Still Alice. But of all the actors this year, Pike’s role and portrayal is the most ballsy and out there; she should be rewarded for such extremes. David FIncher shows his power behind the camera once again: give him control and he will give you excellent cinema.

6) Interstellar
dir. Christopher Nolan

Some consider it to be one of Chris Nolan’s worst films. I must say, that cannot be further from the truth. I cried, I loved, I feared, and I awed in every frame of this wonderful film. The story cannot get any simpler, the setting any grander, and the truth any less impactful. My only regret is that I cannot place it higher on my list

7) Whiplash
dir. Damien Chazelle

My love for this film is two fold. The first goes to the obvious: J.K. Simmons. There is not much else to be said that hasn’t already been said in short blurbs like these best of lists and reviews usually say. I could repeat the usual superlatives, but coming Oscar night, I won’t have to. My second love comes from the sсript that Simmons and Teller manage to support. How far will a person go to achieve perfection? What physical and mental abuses can someone inflict and take to manage this perfection? How does that affect others? What cost will it take on society? Is it moral or immoral?

8) Snowpiercer
dir. Bong Joon-ho

Unfortunately, I had to bring this satirical sci-fi films down from near the top to a little lower. I cannot recommend it enough, but other films take precedence. Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton give two unique performances and the interracial cast and crew prove that it isn’t just white people who can make interesting and entertaining films.

9) Starred Up
dir. David Mackenzie

Jack O’Connell’s breakout performance does not come from Unbroken for me, or even Skins. It came from this great prison film. Other great actors managed to give this kind of portrayal, but they were much older. Few can give it at his age. And with another stellar performance from the yet undervalued Ben Mendelsohn. O’Connell is one to keep an eye on in the future. This isn’t an actor trying to become a star. He is just a great actor doing great work.

10) The Raid 2
dir. Gareth Evans

If you haven’t seen The Raid, do yourself a favor and find it and watch it. These are the most intense martial art films I have ever seen. If Evans can make a third film, then it could be one of the most perfect trilogies ever put on film. My love for Iko Uwais grows with every rewatch. The chase sequences are right in your face, more so than almost any other action flick this year (see John Wick for an English language film this year).

11) Two Days, One Night
dir. Jean-Pierre Dardenne & Luc Dardenne

My top pick for best foreign film. I have not yet seen Mommy, but I highly recommend this film over the biggest front runner, Ida. A woman suffering from depression, encountering the people she works with, trying to convince them not to take a huge bonus so she can have her job. Marion Cotillard’s performance is just as heartbreaking as her other work and I am extremely disappointed that this won’t get much attention, seeing as how if it was in English, many more people would have been talking about it.

12) The Imitation Game
dir. Morten Tyldum

A moving tale of a great man, persecuted by people who did not understand him, with a vision of the future. The man saved millions of lives and won the war but these accomplishments were overshadowed by his sexuality, making that his identity rather than his brilliance. Between Tyldum, Moore, and Cumberbatch, the three men managed to finally give general audiences the true story behind the man and the war.

13) Only Lovers Left Alive
dir. Jim Jarmusch

Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as vampires with the wit and humor of Jim Jarmusch. There isn’t anything here not to love.

14) The Guest
dir. Adam Wingard

Partially a horror film, partially an action film, I prefer the parts that play out like horror. But all of it lays well anyway, so it doesn’t matter. Two of the most underrated performances of the year and Adam Wingard proves that he can handle a full-scale picture of his own. I was hoping he would have signed on as the director of Doctor Strange rather than Scott Derrickson who hasn’t directed a good film since The Exorcism of Emily Rose. And I didn’t mention the soundtrack!!! One of the best of the year.

15) Big Eyes
dir. Tim Burton

Given time, I believe this film will only grow higher on the list. Tim Burton’s return to small form, one of his best work in his entire filmography, and Amy Adams most true and honest performance since she started back in Catch Me If You Can. If this came out almost any other year, I would have thought she would have been the front runner. The courtroom drama, the psychological torture, and Danny Huston!!! It makes for excellent film.

16) Coherence
dir. James Ward Byrkit

One of the best sci-fi films out there. Between this and The One I Love, indie sci-fi continues to prove more ingenious than most blockbusters do. These unknown actors do marvels in this confined and strange set up of a dinner that goes horribly wrong.

17) Locke
dir. Steven Knight

Tom Hardy and his one man show pull this film together. People often joke that they could watch their favorite actor do anything for an hour a half or more and still be entertained. While Locke does not tell an entertaining story, it does tell a story about true life that I find relevant and beautiful.
